100th Day of School Rainbow Mickey Upcycle

Does your child’s school celebrate the 100th day of school?  Since my kids have started kindergarten, each year one day in February it is time for their celebration.  The day varies each year and since we live in Maine – every snow day we have pushes it back.  Buddy is in kindergarten and their project is super easy – collect 100 of the same item from home and bring in to school in a small brown paper bag.  Boo Boo is in 1st grade this year and her project was a bit more open ended.  Read on to hear how we turned construction paper, ribbon, and a leftover Chick-fil-A container into a pretty awesome 100th day of school rainbow Mickey project.

I do some scrapbooking and had recently used a Mickey Mouse shaped paper punch and Boo Boo decided she wanted to make 100 Mickey’s for her project.  I helped her to come up with the idea for how to display them.  She didn’t want to make a poster so we brainstormed – I suggested that we could staple the Mickey’s to ribbon so they could hang down but wasn’t sure what we would use for them to hang from.

Our inspiration came from a snow day lunch.   We had another snow day – pushing the 100th day of school back one more day.  School got cancelled due to the severity of the storm hitting at the end of the day – since the snow hadn’t started we decided to head to Chick-fil-A for lunch.  I am part of the Chick-fil-A Mom Panel and received a few awesome offer cards and one was for the amazing Chicken Tortilla Soup.  With the offer cards we also received a challenge – after eating the soup we were supposed to bring the container home, wash it out and upcycle it.  I bet you can guess where this is headed!  The bowl is black already – add some ears – viola – Mickey head!!  Perfect for the top of a mobile.

Materials Needed

  • Construction paper (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, black)
  • Ribbon (any color)
  • Empty and washed Chick-fil-A soup bowl
  • Mickey Mouse paper punch
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Circle shape to trace
  • Stapler
  • Stickers (optional)

Instructions

  • Cut out 100 Mickey heads (we did 15 of 2 colors and 14 of the other 5)
  • Preheat glue gun
  • Use a circle to trace out to black circles, cut out
  • Fold a flap on the bottom of the circles to glue to the bottom of the soup bowl

  • Cut a piece of ribbon, double it over, tie the ends and glue to the bottom of the bowl (in the middle between the ears) with the hot glue gun
  • Get ribbon of your choice – leave 3 inches roughly at the top (so you can attach it inside the soup bowl once you complete the strand), start stapling one color of the Mickey heads to the ribbon leaving half an inch between the Mickey’s

  • Repeat until you have attached all of one color to the ribbon, cut the ribbon
  • Start your next Mickey head strand, repeat until all colors are done (this is the time consuming part of the project)
  • On the inside of the bowl put a line of hot glue – fold the long end of the ribbon and stick to the glue (I used a pen for this so I wouldn’t burn my finger)
  • Continue gluing the strands on – space the ribbons out so they hang equally around the bowl
  • Optional – decorate the bowl and Mickey ears with stickers
