Father’s Day Handprint Platter
Father’s Day is on the horizon. Take a peek at the Father’s Day Handprint platter we made two years ago for my husband. The inspiration for this project came from a cup full of sass. They had a roundup of various activities they did for Father’s Day posted and I thought the grill plate was a cute idea. The kids and I headed to Walmart and bought a Corelle platter, some paint markers and a few additional colors of acrylic paint.

Materials Needed
***These directions would be for a plate that is for display only – see Food Safe paint recommendation below or use below directions with Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge***
- Oven safe platter (we bought something similar to this one – if you are looking for a large platter this one is popular)
- Acrylic paints (assorted colors)
- Paint Markers (assorted colors)
- Paint plate and brushes
Instructions
First I had the kids each pick what color paint they wanted – they both picked green as it is Hubby’s favorite color. I started with Buddy as I figured he would be more likely to accidentally smear Boo Boo’s handprint.I painted Buddy’s hand and had him press it down. Next I repeated the process with Boo Boo. And since I’m a little crazy I decided to add Zoe’s paw print to the mix (she was actually really well behaved!).
After the prints were complete I preheated the oven to 350º. While the oven was preheating I used the paint markers to write our message on the platter and label each print. When the design was complete and the oven preheated I baked the platter for 15 minutes.
I thought this was a cute thing we could do handprints on for my husband.
***Disclaimer: after using this I have found the acrylic paint does not stay bonded and upon further research is not food safe. This plate would be great for a display item when using acrylic paint. I have researched and found another option of paint – Pebeo Porecelain. These paints are non-toxic and once baked permanent (they can withstand the dishwasher!)***

Are the acrylic paints food safe? What does the baking process do for the acrylic paints? I love the idea but want to make sure it is safe to actually use. Thanks!
I did more research into this and have found that most people use acrylic’s and bake for display only. I found a paint that is food safe and more durable and have added that information to my blog post.
Is the pebeo safe for hands?
The paint is non toxic so should be fine to use on hands. Apply and wash immediately following and you should be all set!

If I use the dishwasher safe mod podge, would I put it on after it has baked in the oven?
Bake the platter with the paint to harden first. With the mod podge if you do not want to allow the item the full 28 days to cure after applying the dishwasher safe mod podge you can heat cure instead. I have not done this method before myself but I have read you would apply the mod podge, heat the platter for one hour at 175 degrees, and allow the platter to fully cool in the oven prior to removal.
I just purchased the pebeo paint and plate you recommend and can’t wait to make a father’s day gift. My question is, can I paint a design, bake the plate, and then put my son’s handprint on it and bake again? This way I can set the design and then if I need to do the handprint over a few times I can just clean the handprint off and not the design.
From my research I think it would be fine to paint the design and bake to set the original design and then add your sons handprint and bake again. I would make sure you follow the directions for baking from Pebeo paint instructions. Good luck!

After baking when and how do we apply dishwasher safe modge podge?

I would recommend reading through this post as well as following the directions you receive with the mod podge. I believe you can apply the dishwasher safe mod podge as soon as the item you baked has cooled.
I love this idea. I was wondering if I could use crayola paints since it is non toxic as well. I’m just not sure it would stick to the plate.
I haven’t used the crayola paints so I can’t say for sure. I am not sure if they would stay adhered and even if you topped with the dishwasher safe mod podge they may run. The only way to find out would be to try! Good luck 🙂

If I bake it according to your directions, is it necessary to put some kind of sealer (like the Mod Podge) on the platter?
Yes – if you don’t seal the paint it would not be food safe and the paint will wash off even with handwashing. If you use the Pebeo Porecelain paints you would not have to seal with the dishwasher safe mod podge. If the platter will just be as a display you can just use the acrylic paint and not seal.
Could you bake the handprints then make a design and heat it again? I’m just nervous I’ll smear the handprints while drawing the design I want to do. Also did you put the mod podge over the handprints?
From the research I did previously I found that you could heat more than once. Once you heat you put mod podge over the entire design.
If using the Pebeo paints, do you also need to do a clear/top coat to set it? I’m not crafty so I don’t know anything about this kind of thing. I have a porcelaine plate but am not sure if any acrylic paint will do or…

Looking at doing this for Father’s Day. A couple of questions 1) Can I put the plate in the oven before I turn it on to heat up gradually with the oven or put the plate in only once the oven has been heated?
2) Are the Pebeo Procelain paints food safe & dishwasher safe?
& if I used the dishwasher safe Mod Podge is that safe for food? I’m basically looking for food safe & dishwasher safe products if possible. Thanks 😊
Could I use regular mod podge gloss instead of the specific dishwasher safe one and be ok? I picked up the gloss by mistake. I’ll return if needed but if not dealing with the hassle. Thanks!
