Festive Turkey Handprint and Footprint Paper Plate Hat

I feel like I’m behind the ball this year with my seasonal crafts compared to other kid blogs I follow.  I post our projects as we do them and honestly I can’t see myself doing projects months in advance.  But I decided today to do a Thanksgiving project with Buddy.  The inspiration came from two blogs – Crafty Morning and Pin Stripey Socks.  I used a combination of their ideas and some of my own and came up with our Festive Turkey Handprint and Footprint Paper Plate Hat.

Materials Needed

• Paper Plate
• Red, Orange, Yellow and Brown Construction Paper
• Thanksgiving Stickers
• Pen
• Scissors
• Glue Stick
• Tape
• Black Marker

Instructions

• Fold the paper plate in half and cut out the center – you want the hat to fit comfortably on your child’s head.  Leave a small oval in the front to attach your turkey body.
• Trace your child’s footprint on brown paper – this will be the turkey body
• Trace your child’s handprint on red, orange and yellow paper – these will be the feathers
• Cut out all the handprints and footprint

• Using a glue stick attach the footprint to the paper plate
• Using a glue stick attach the handprints to each other and then to the back of the footprint and plate
• Cut out the small pieces: the eyes (I used pieces of the center of the plate I cut out), beak, waddle, and legs
• Glue the eyes, beak and waddle on
• Tape the legs on to the bottom of the plate

• Decorate the plate with Thanksgiving stickers

This project was cute but definitely more than Buddy could do himself.  I traced and cut almost everything.  He helped attach the pieces and cut the beak.  He loved decorating the hat with stickers!  I would say that this project would be geared towards kids probably 1st grade and up if you want them to do it independently.  You can definitely do it with younger kids but will be more actively involved.
