Olaf Cupcake Cake Tutorial

Olaf Cupcake Cake Tutorial

I let Boo Boo choose what she wanted for a cake for her bowling party.  I showed her an Elsa cupcake cake or an Olaf cupcake cake and was honestly surprised when she picked Olaf.  But I was excited as I thought he would be fun to make.

I used two cake mixes – a chocolate and a Duff tie-dye cake mix that I had received in my #DisneySide party box.  This made a total of 48 cupcakes – 44 I used to create Olaf and the remaining 4 I used to write Happy Birthday on the side.

The Duff cake mix honestly was a lot of work but Boo Boo was really excited about tie dye cupcakes.  First you make the cake mix as per the directions – omitting the egg yolks to keep the cake white.  After you have the cake mixed you divide the batter into 6 bowls.  Follow the directions for the number of drops of dye and make some pretty vibrant colors.

After baking let your cupcakes cool completely before decorating.

I ended up taping two rectangular cake boards together to make one board large enough for Olaf.  I drew my layout before starting so people could have an idea of cupcake position.

Then I positioned the cupcakes.

Finally I decorated.  This is the most time consuming portion.  For this cake I made the white buttercream (I use the Wilton recipe – you can find that here.)  I bought the Wilton black icing pre-made because I can never get the deep color and honestly I decided to save time for myself.  I used a little bit of the white and made it orange.  I used a Wilton number 16 tip for my stars and a number 3 tip for my outlines.  For Olaf’s hair I used the tip provided on the store bought bag of frosting.

Here is the finished product with the Happy Birthday message.

This cake was not fast to make but it sure made Boo Boo happy when she saw the finished product.  Now to finish the final preparation for her bowling party today and get everything there in one piece!

This morning Buddy got an Olaf shirt to wear to the party and Boo Boo got a new Frozen headband!  Happy kiddos 🙂

  • That is an awesome cake. It is so easy to not have to cut into it and just take the cupcakes apart. So cool :-D
