Watercolor Coffee Filter Sun Catcher Hearts for Valentine’s Day

So as we (I guess it should be just I but I figure it makes it sound better if its not just me waiting!) continue to eagerly await our Disney Side package I have done another Valentine’s Day craft with the kids.  This one was very easy for both kids -again Buddy didn’t stay involved for nearly as long as Boo Boo but I’ve come to expect that and realize it is how life is at our house.  I don’t know if its because of the boy/girl thing or if its the age difference or most likely its just a combination of both.

So yesterday we made watercolor coffee filter sun catcher hearts (boy that’s a mouthful!).  These are fairly easy skill level and can be completed with materials you have around the house (at least that we have around our house).

Materials needed for this project:

Watercolor paints, paint brushes, coffee filters, water cups, scissors and tape.

As I usually do I had all of the materials gathered up and on the table ready for the kiddos to start.

Buddy just got the new jumbo watercolor set for Christmas in part of a Toy Story activity kit and was very excited to use it.  Both kids jumped right in and started painting.

After they finished one I would take it to our stove to dry (sorry I didn’t realize how dirty it was until I looked at the picture!! uh oh – time to get cleaning) and get them a new one if they wanted.  Buddy finished two while Boo Boo made four, and I couldn’t resist so I made one as well.

I couldn’t help but share a picture of the pups as they lounged in front of the pellet stove on our -12 degree morning (disclaimer it was probably around 2 or 3 degrees at the time the photo was taken).

As they are a lightweight material they dry fairly quickly.

After drying I folded them in half.

After folding in half I cut out a heart shape.  I repeated this process until I had made hearts from all of the painted coffee filters.

After cutting I took them to the desired window.  I cut a small piece of tape and taped them from the top of the heart.  Viola – homemade sun catchers in under an hour (probably closer to thirty minutes!).
