Disney on Ice – Dare to Dream Review

Last night I loaded up the mini van and headed out for a two hour road trip (each way).  I am in love with our new Honda Odyssey and taking it for its inaugural trip to see Disney on Ice proved that it will be a great family vehicle.  My mom and I chatted while the kids in the second row played games, watched DVD’s and on the way home slept.  But I digress – Disney on Ice – Dare to Dream was great!  

If you didn’t realize my love of all things Disney – I think the fact that I took a four hour round trip road trip (on a school night mind you) with a 6 year old and a 5 year old should clue you in.  We had a great time and really enjoyed the show.  I was proud of my daughter – she managed to stay awake for the whole show this year!  It’s hard for little ones who go to bed at 7pm to stay functioning through a show that doesn’t start until 7pm but they both did great (maybe the two bags of cotton candy we purchased at intermission played into that?!?)

This was our second time see a Disney on Ice production and it did not disappoint.  I think my son would have preferred a show that didn’t focus on just princesses but he watched wide eyed anyways.  

I love that both shows we have seen have been hosted by Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy – its fun to see the classic characters even if they aren’t the main performers.

The first half of the show consisted of The Princess and the Frog, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the first part of Cinderella.  Take a peek at quick video I took below (find more on my Facebook page here):

The second half finished the story of Cinderella and featured Tangled.  I have decided after two shows that I LOVE the finale and in my opinion it is the best part of each show (but I guess that’s what a finale by definition is supposed to be right?).

This was my moms first Disney on Ice experience and she enjoyed it – her favorite part of the performance was Tangled.  Boo Boo loved Cinderella as that is her favorite princess.  I wager that Buddy’s favorite was Tangled as well as it had a lot of action (what boy doesn’t love sword fights and ice skating horses?!?).  

I highly recommend attending one of the upcoming showings of Dare to Dream in Portland (see dates and times below) or checking the Disney on Ice website for a show near you.

Fun Family Winter Weekend in Southern Maine

If you are from Maine you probably know – once winter sets in life can get a bit weary.  This is especially true for kids when the weather isn’t cooperative to let them get out and play they can get a little stir crazy.  A few weeks ago we headed down to spend a night in the Portland area and I decided to share a list of things to do for a fun family winter weekend in southern Maine.

Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine

Are you looking for a day out with a focus on the kids?  Stop by the Children’s Museum and be entertained.  Visit the various exhibits and move from floor to floor in a hands on learning environment.  Milk a cow, fix a car, fight a fire or play on the playscape.  Hours of fun are waiting for you.  The Museum is located at 142 Free Street.  Take a look at the website for current operating hours and pricing.  

Our kids (ages 6 and 5) had a blast – we spent close to 3 hours at the museum and they could have stayed longer.

Get Air Trampoline Park 

Are you looking for a way to exercise off the energy?  Stop by the Get Air Trampoline Park located at 921 Riverside Street.  Visit the website for current hours and pricing.  Don’t worry about your smaller kids getting trampled – they can hang out in the under 46″ area.  

We played for an hour and the kids were hot and tired by the end.  They really enjoyed the Ninja Course and just bouncing around.

Visit Portland Head Light

Walk around in the park or visit the museum.  While it is cold in winter if you bundle up the view is worth it!  Visit their website for hours and pricing information.

Visit the Portland Public Library

Check out the Programs and Events for Children and Families and you are sure to find something almost every day of the week.  Get out of the house and break the boredom.

Head to the Maine Mall

Visit the mall and do some shopping, walk around, ride the carousel, or have ice cream.  

Cross Insurance Arena

Keep an eye out for family friendly shows that come to the Cross Insurance Arena.  In January you can catch Disney on Ice (find more information with a ticket giveaway happening until 12/23/16 here).

Holiday Related Fun

Polar Express

 Join the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad as they celebrate Christmas with a ride on the Polar Express.  Come in your pajamas and delight in experience.  Drink hot cocoa and eat sugar cookies as you regaled with a reading of the Polar Express before meeting the big man himself!  

Our kids had a lot of fun and enjoyed the train ride and having Santa walk through the train car and talk to each child.  This is the largest annual fundraiser for the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum so its fun for a great cause.  Check dates and buy tickets here.

L.L. Bean Northern Lights Celebration

This free event runs from late November until December 31st each year in Freeport and is a lot of fun.  The schedule of events is the same pretty much every weekend with a few added events on specific weekends.  Meet Santa, pat his reindeer, view the Northern Lights or head out on a horse drawn carriage ride.  There is plenty to do and see and the Christmas lights are spectacular.  If you are in the area this is definitely worth a stop.  The kids enjoyed meeting Santa and seeing a baby reindeer when we visited this year.

Today I was lucky enough to attend the pre-opening lunch at the soon to open Chick-fil-A in Bangor, Maine! My mom was my guest and we had an awesome time. We sampled various menu items, got a behind the scenes tour of the kitchen and mingled with other members of the Bangor community.  I can’t wait for the Chick-fil-A Bangor Grand Opening so the whole family can check the restaurant out!

Enjoy Family Fun with Sesame Street Live + Giveaway

The theme song takes me back to my own childhood – doesn’t it you?  What other show has been around for 40 years?  None that I can think of.  I enjoyed watching Sesame Street as a child and still enjoy watching with my children to this day if I’m completely honest.  If you have a Sesame Street loving child and live in the Bangor, Maine area make sure you head to the Cross Insurance Center for family fun with Sesame Street Live!

My daughter has adored Sesame Street since she was very young – she loves music and always loves whenever the Muppets would all start singing.  I love that Sesame Street provides a solid foundation for learning and shares about diversity.  My kids love that it is fun and fast paced.  It’s nice when you can find a show that the kids enjoy and is educational at the same time.  

Sesame Street shows children that is alright to be different and that no two people (or Muppets) are alike.  Our family is biracial and I love that Sesame Street shows different cultures.  I especially love the episodes that include Rosita.  Rosita is bilingual and speaks both Spanish and English just like husband and children.  It is important for kids to have characters that they relate to and I am grateful that Sesame Street provides such a wide cast from a Muppet with autism to a Muppet who is blind and pretty much everything in between.

Fun Ways to Enjoy Leaf Peeping in Maine

Have you ever been leaf peeping??  Do you even know what leaf peeping is?  As a Mainer I’ve grown up with leaf peepers taking over every Fall as long as I can remember.  Fall is beautiful up here and people travel from great distances to come and see the foliage at its peak.  I’ve come up with a list of fun ways to enjoy leaf peeping in Maine.

The peak conditions vary and are broken out in regions.  Pop over to Maine Foliage for an up to date report on the status of the leaf colors.

Fun Ideas for Leaf Peeping

• Head to Acadia National Park to enjoy the beautiful scenery and the leaves!  You can hike or ride up the mountain and be immersed in the fall foliage.
• Go on a Fall Foliage driving tour.  Get some sample itineraries here. 
• Take a ride on the CAT Ferry from Portland to Nova Scotia!  A five and a half hour trip on Fast Ferry will allow you to possibly see ocean animals and the beautiful Fall foliage (until October 1st only).  You can find more information on things to do in Nova Scotia and places to stay on the Cat Ferry website.
• Enjoy a Windjammer Coastal Fall Foliage Cruise.  
• Go on a scenic train ride – some offer special themed rides in the fall.  For more information visit Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad and Downeast Scenic Railroad.
• Head to one of our local farms or orchards to pick apples or pumpkins.  Find a list here.
• Visit a corn maze – my favorite in our region is located at Treworgy Farms – read about our last visit here.
• Visit the Fryeburg Fair.  The fair will be running his year when the peak foliage is happening (October 2-9, 2016)
• Head outside and go hiking as a family – pack a picnic and relax outside.
