At the end of our whirlwind long weekend of travel we stopped at the Mystic Aquarium.  This was a perfect pit stop on our 8+ hour drive home as it gave the kids an opportunity to stretch their legs and see some pretty cool animals and fish!

We arrived at Mystic Aquarium shortly after noon and it was a hot day!  We headed straight into the exhibits and saw the Beluga whales first.  I was so excited to see them and they didn’t disappoint.  They are really quite majestic to view.

Next we headed down the outdoor path to the penguins.  I was honestly surprised to see them outside in the heat as I usually think of them as arctic animals.  The kids enjoyed viewing them swimming.

After we visited the penguins we went to the Pacific Northwest and saw the sea lions.  The kids love hearing the sea lions talk.

We walked over to the main exhibit and were greeted with the sweet relief of air conditioning!  It was 94 when we visited so the main exhibit was my favorite part as it got us out of the heat.  The kids were enamored with the fish tanks.  Buddy enjoyed the touch tanks (Boo Boo not so much).  We explored the main exhibit for probably close to an hour.

When we left the main exhibit we went out and touched the rays.  I love how soft and smooth they are!

We went into the Exploration Wild exhibit and the kids loved the scavenger hunt that was provided.  The kids are very quick to walk through exhibits without really looking but when they have a “job” they are quite thorough.  Buddy really loved seeing the alligators and was very happy to see one swim in the tank.

We finished up our visit by heading back to the Beluga tank and watching them swim for a while longer.  We spent roughly three hours at the aquarium and really enjoyed our visit. The aquarium was fun to visit and will definitely be on our list of places to recommend to friends.

The aquarium has daily shows and feeding times – the schedule is posted at the front of the aquarium right after the photo opp.  You can find more information on the Mystic Aquarium’s website here.  Unfortunately for us the timing of our visit didn’t allow us to see any feedings or shows but I’m sure they were great!

We had general admission tickets and visited the beluga whales, the penguins, Exploration Wild, the Main Exhibit Gallery, the jelly fish, and the sea lions.  General admission doesn’t include the seasonal exhibit (which was Birds of the Outback) or the 4-D show.  For information on ticket pricing and upgrades click here.
